DAYCARE AND COMMON INFECTIONS

 

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, most children do not need to be excluded from their regular day care for common respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses except in the following situations:

1.)  too ill to participate in the day care program

2.)  medical needs are too great for the staff to perform

3.)  communicable diseases such as: impetigo, whooping cough, chickenpox, strep throat, lice, or scabies.

4.)  undiagnosed fever of 101 degrees or above

5.)  diarrhea if stool not contained in diaper or blood/mucus in stools

6.)  vomiting two or more times in the previous 24 hours

7.)  significant abdominal or other pain

8.)  mouth sores that are contagious

9.)  progressive rash with fever or behavioral changes

10.) skin lesions that are contagious
